About This Blog
This is a personal blog. It's one part personal stuff, one part media that I'm into, and one part sociopolitical issues I care about.

Things on my mind lately include Battlestar Galactica, the fate of River Song, the challenges of traveling solo as a woman, and how to transcend misogynistic narratives in traditional Appalachian music.

Stuff I typically blog:
→ politics (American and international)
→ international relations
→ social justice (especially intersectional feminism)
→ language & linguistics
→ the Balkans
→ Palestine
→ gymnastics
→ personal stuff
Alison Krauss
fandom

This blog doubles as an Alison Krauss' boobs appreciation blog because for some reason, when you do a Google search for Alison's boobs, my blog is generally the first relevant result. I don't know how this happened, but I will accept it. If people are gonna be googling her boobs, better they find the blog of a fangirl expressing solidarity than that of some skeezy dude objectifying her.

If I ever disappear or get hacked, find me at iellaantilles.tumblr.com.

So in a post today mostly unrelated to what I want to talk about,  John Green stated, “It’s not okay to ship real people and other real people.” I respect John Green in all ways, but I disagree 100% with this statement, and I want to clear up why Real Person Fiction is not actually wrong.

The first important issue to cover is that RPF is not tinhatting is not harassment. If you ship something, you like to think about it, write about it, draw it, joke about it, talk about it with your friends, and it makes you happy in your own little corner of the world. This is okay. Tinhatting is when you believe your ship is really happening in real life and the Powers That Be are hiding it from you. This is also okay, until it becomes harassment, which is when you throw your ship into the involved people’s faces repeatedly in spite of requests to stop and you say nasty stuff about their girlfriends to them and generally make everybody unhappy. This is never okay.

But that’s not what shipping is, and that’s not what RPF is. The first point I want to make here is that RPF is not actually about real people.

Urgh, I knew I got that vibe from John Green…

Surprisingly, perfectionists are often procrastinators, as they can tend to think “I don’t have the right skills or resources to do this perfectly now, so I won’t do it at all.”

My entire educational experience summed up in one sentence.

Because my idea of writing the physical actions that take place in a scene is basically, “She walked over there. She sat down. He shook his head and said some words.” It’s terrible.

I shouldn’t even be writing at all tbh. I’m nothing like most of the people who do Yuletide, who can just come up with a story and tailor it to their recipient’s wishes and write 10k words in one day, and then turn around and write ten extra stories just because they feel like it.

Tonight somebody on LJ was like, “I definitely don’t feel like this fic is my best work. I mean, it’s only 12,000 words!”

…The longest I’ve ever written was 13k, and it nearly killed me. Like. How.

Someone remind me never, ever to try to write a fic with action in it ever again.

“Consent is tricky in fiction.”

I… don’t see how, really.

Do you ever just read over your old fic and think, “What part of me wrote that and how can I make it do it again?”

IDK man I guess you’ll have to wait until Christmas to find out~

Lol how mad would you be if the one Yuletide fill I managed to finish was the Doctor Who crossover?

I’m gonna finish at least four fics before Christmas.

I am. That is my goal.

in case you needed more proof that fandom is sexist, searches of the tags fellatio, blowjob, blowjobs, blow job, and blow jobs on ao3 turn up a total of 4835 results

cunnilingus turns up 750

There are lots of directions I could go here. A post about feminism! A joke about having 750 stories to read! A comment about how I don’t tag that sort of thing! A promise to increase that number! A post about how I can’t choose so I will just list the possibilities and use exclamation points! Yes, that last one is a winner!

I actually kind of wish people would tag for blowjobs? Because it bothers me to read fic where blowjobs are necessary par for the course.

Of course, most of the reason why blowjob fics outnumber cunnilingus fics is because of fandom’s general obsession with m/m slash, which… yeah. Not even gonna go there. *sigh*

"What DOES seem kinda unrealistic is that I have never read a fic where the characters tried condoms with different flavors or fancy textures or glow-in-the-dark technology." Ah ha ha haaa! It is obviously time for you to start writing fic.

Now all I can think about is Anderson and Ayman having a lightsaber duel with their glowing-condom-clad dicks.
