About This Blog
This is a personal blog. It's one part personal stuff, one part media that I'm into, and one part sociopolitical issues I care about.

Things on my mind lately include Battlestar Galactica, the fate of River Song, the challenges of traveling solo as a woman, and how to transcend misogynistic narratives in traditional Appalachian music.

Stuff I typically blog:
→ politics (American and international)
→ international relations
→ social justice (especially intersectional feminism)
→ language & linguistics
→ the Balkans
→ Palestine
→ gymnastics
→ personal stuff
Alison Krauss
fandom

This blog doubles as an Alison Krauss' boobs appreciation blog because for some reason, when you do a Google search for Alison's boobs, my blog is generally the first relevant result. I don't know how this happened, but I will accept it. If people are gonna be googling her boobs, better they find the blog of a fangirl expressing solidarity than that of some skeezy dude objectifying her.

If I ever disappear or get hacked, find me at iellaantilles.tumblr.com.

So, this happened today.

But only male fetuses, apparently.

It’s fun to think back to high school and realize how obvious it was which guys were going to grow up to be the ones with pictures of Reagan on their Facebook pages.

Most people on food stamps work full time. They work full time but they don’t have enough money to pay for food for their kids. So really, in some ways, food stamps are about a business subsidy because it allows low wage business workers to… feed their families and continue working. But we call it charity, or the Republicans call it charity. They want to cut food stamps so badly that every church, synagogue, mosque, house of worship in the United States—every single one—[would] have to raise an additional $50,000 every year for ten years to replace what he wants to cut. It’s not gonna happen. It’s not gonna work.

I like how she articulates the simple financial impossibility of religious organizations being able to replace government aid. I’d like to add that, of course, there are so many people who have trouble receiving aid from religious institutions because they’re LGBT and/or non-religious or have a fraught relationship to religion… aid is a human right—and, as she points out, a business subsidy as well as a subsidy to food companies—which people should be able to receive in a secular setting.

Lol this character on House of Cards is getting reamed just because he may have once said Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza was illegal.

Reasons why I can never run for political office.

i think you means reasons why you should run for every political office.

And never get elected. =(

Getting real tired of all the “We built this!” signs popping up outside businesses. Might as well put a sign out front saying “Honk if they never taught you to listen for context in school!”

It’s especially funny out in front of a farm. Plz, y’all wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for government subsidies.

that is some shit. bullhonkey, specifically.

I don’t get this idea that if someone is educated on a topic and yet their beliefs wrt that topic differ from yours, they’re automatically the one who’s wrong.

Like, there’s tons and tons of research and debate out there on every single social, political or economic issue … but people just choose to believe what the folks on Facebook tell them?

Nobody claims to be an expert on electrical engineering just because they use electricity in their house, but everybody thinks they’re an expert on social issues just because they live in a society.

The genius of the US government is that it can get away with spending money on absolutely anything it wants, because no matter how it actually spends people’s taxes, everybody will just blame the poor.

lord-kitschener:

“Fiscally conservative but socially liberal” is a hip, trendy way of saying “I still think poor kids are being too grabby with this whole ‘wanting food’ thing, but I also like weed.”

No, “fiscally conservative but socially liberal” is a way for confused white teenagers from conservative families to reconcile everything their parents have taught them with the sneaking suspicion that gay people are probably not actually ruining America.

I tend to think most of them will come around eventually.
